Of her work, Kathy says: “My passion for photography is rooted deep in my childhood love of nature. An explorer at heart, I have traveled with camera in hand, desiring to possess the fleeting images of the mystery and radiance of nature and the profound joy and drama that surround me every day. Somewhere along the way, my images have become a meditation on film and the line where nature ends and art begins was crossed. Through my photography, I hope to forever capture an ephemeral moment, and share with others what my camera sees but the human eye often does not.”
She has taught photography, design and art at Loyola Marymount University, George Washington University, Smithsonian Institution, the Human Potential Foundation, and the Idyllwild Elementary School. Visit her on-line gallery at www.KathyHarmonLuber.com
Laundry : Voyeur
It all started with Earth Day 2009. As a small act of kindness for Mother Earth, I hung a clothesline between two towering pine trees in our backyard. Late one afternoon, I went out back to gather the crisp white sheets from the line, when I became mesmerized by the golden light shimmering through them. It triggered all the synapses, and the “Laundry : Voyeur” portfolio was born.
The very next day, I raided my lingerie drawers for all the pretty white lacey things. Trying to think of other luminous white elements led me to my art studio for the petit angel wings. Et voila.
Since then, I’ve spent many a “golden hour” watching the light for just the right moment of illumination and puff of breeze. In fact, this portfolio is all about a rare and fleeting moment of beauty, which shimmers in its magic, and then is gone forever… voyeuristic in its glimpse.
It is evocative of French laundry circa 1950s. I think this work is quite Sfumato, an Italian word which refers to a certain art technique which gives a hazy, mysterious quality of gossamer thin layers. It’s also a wonderful metaphor for life and romance.
I wish to thank my husband Ken Luber, first for all the pretty lingerie he’s given me over the years, and as importantly, for allowing me to show it off here at Café Aroma.
