the vibe

Idyllwild's funnest and funkiest fine dining establishment, Cafe Aroma is the hot spot in Idyllwild.  Join us for espresso - freshly made with Wild Rock beans custom-roasted for Cafe Aroma - and one of our world-famous scones in the morning.  Or, take in the clean mountain air and panoramic view of Tahquitz Peak while enjoying a relaxing lunch on our free wi-fi enabled deck...the inspiration of Aroma's owner, Hubert Halkin, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at UCSD.

The community of Idyllwild is comprised of entrepeneurs & worker-bees, hippies & church-goers, old school jazz cats & classical musicians, bellydancers & ballerinas. Cafe Aroma is the gathering place for everybody. A social club that feels like home...if your home was this cool.

the art

A one-of-a-kind bistro-gallery experience featuring the finest local artists in rotating exhibits.

Café Aroma is proud to have the works of our Artist in Residence, Rachel Welch, displayed in our library and on our private label house wines. Rachel studied art in Italy, receiving her degree from the Acadamia de Bella Arte.

Suzi DuAmarell’s “Durable Abstracts” are displayed around the outside deck of Café Aroma. From hanging trout to retro hairstylists, Suzi’s art is as intriguing as it is shiny! A ten-year resident of Idyllwild, Suzi earned her degree from CalState San Bernardino, studying with the renowned John Nava.

But unlike those bygone landmarks which attracted mainly dressed-up crowds for weekend brunch and upper-crust business folk for weekend dinners, Aroma is casual, laid-back and welcoming to all comers. Halkin's restaurant, Cafe Aroma, is one of Idyllwild's creative hubs. Here you can dine under the stars and catch poetry readings or sets by jazz musicians. Inside, there's a library area, where people often just hang out and talk. And if it seems like everyone knows everyone at Cafe Aroma, that's no accident. "This is quite a bit of a social club," says Halkin. "We wanted to keep the place relaxed, arty, and a little funky." [read full review]
